Sourdough Starter: Day 3

So here we are folks- Day 3 of the incredible Sourdough Starter Challenge (as I’ve been referring to it today). I’m feeling a bit unsure. I was so confident that it was working yesterday, especially when I saw some growth last night, but this morning it was flat and a bit sad looking (photo above). Then, the worst thing happened: I realized I should have started two a day feedings this morning. Total palm hitting the forehead moment. I’m hoping that it may just delay my starter a bit- as there were still plenty of bubbles and growth last night. Oh well, we must persevere because homemade sourdough is at stake! Here is what you should do on Day 3:

You should definitely have seen some activity by this time: bubbles, growth and a kind of sweet aroma. As evenly spaced as you can, you need to start feeding the starter twice a day. I’m feeding mine at 7am and 7pm.

Day 3:

What you need for each feeding:

1 cup/ 4oz all-purpose flour
1/2 cup/ 4oz non-chlorinated water, cool

Each time you feed the starter, you need to weigh out 4oz of starter. This is what you will keep. Discard the rest (we don’t want an uncontrollable, almost out of a Ghostbusters film sourdough starter!). Then you need to add the flour and water to the 4oz starter that you weighed out. Mix thoroughly, cover and place back in the warm spot for 12 hours. Repeat the process again 12 hours later. Here’s what mine looked like after feeding:

You repeat Day 3 on Days 4 and 5. I’ll be back tomorrow to let you know how it’s going! Fingers crossed! xx
